Jeudi, alors que le soleil se couchait sur Abuja, la capitale du Nigeria, le cardinal John Onaiyekan est arrivé à la mosquée Al-Habibiyah. Près de 2 000 fidèles s’étaient rassemblés pour effectuer des prières avant de rompre le jeûne du Ramadan.
L’ancien archevêque d’Abuja n’était pas venu pour faire la messe, mais plutôt pour partager le repas de l’Iftar avec les fidèles musulmans.
Quelques minutes plus tard, le prélat distribuait des plateaux à des jeunes hommes pour la plupart excités.
« Nous faisons de notre mieux pour répandre une attitude d’ouverture car nous croyons que Dieu ne veut pas que ses enfants s’entretuent. Il veut que nous vivions en paix. Donc, tout ce que nous pouvons faire pour promouvoir la paix, nous devons le faire », a déclaré le cardinal John Onaiyekan.
Le Nigeria compte plus de 200 millions d’habitants… Avec la Covid-19 qui affecte les revenus et les emplois, le Ramadan de cette année est un défi pour de nombreux fidèles.
Le conflit dans le nord et le nord-est du pays a également rendu la vie plus difficile pour des millions de musulmans dans le pays. Le Nigeria a déjà été secoué par des tensions religieuses par le passé.
« Les gens voient que la nourriture que nous mangeons nous a été offerte par un clergé chrétien, un cardinal que tout le monde connaît », a déclaré Fuad Adeyemi, imam en chef de la société islamique Al-Habibiyyah.
« Il ne s’agit pas d’un clergé clandestin. Cela montre que nous pouvons réellement vivre ensemble, que nous pouvons être amis et que nous pouvons vivre en paix », a-t-il ajouté.
